Cosmetic Nose Surgery - Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is the most commonly performed aesthetic intervention performed in Turkey. In rhinoplasty surgery, the size of your nose, the width of your nostrils, the angle between your nose and the upper lip, the malformations on the tip of the nose and nasal dorsum can be changed. Moreover, some breathing problems can be functionally eliminated and congenital nasal deformities can be corrected.

Since the nose is in the middle of the face and is the most protruding area of the human face, it plays a major role in the formation of a personal image. Even the smallest nasal malformation adversely affects the shape of the face. Therefore, rhinoplasty surgeries have a very important role in correcting the negative thoughts about the appearance of an individual.

Before deciding on the surgery, ask yourself why you want to undergo the surgery and what you expect from this surgery, think carefully and discuss these with your doctor. The most suitable patients for rhinoplasty surgery are not those looking for perfection, but those expecting a change and improvement in their outer appearance.

A good communication between you and your doctor is essential and very important. During your first visit, your doctor will ask you what or how you want your nose to look like, will examine the structure of your nose and face and will explain you the possibilities. The structure of your nasal bones and cartilage, the shape of your face, the thickness of your skin, your age and expectations are the main topics of the discussion.

During the surgery, a different nose should be attempted to be created depending on each face type. Thus, the outcome of the surgery would be natural, suitable for the face and unrecognizable by others. The possession of the complicated anatomy of the nose requires long years of training and surgical practice.

From the point of age group, it is preferable to postpone surgeries of adolescents until they complete their development. In general, patients are expected to have turned 18 years old.

The surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and takes 1-3 hours on average. Rhinoplasty surgeries are performed using the closed or open technique. In the closed technique, all incisions are made in the intranasal region. In the open technique, a small incision is made on the bottom of the nasal tip in addition to intranasal incisions. The technique to be used is related to the procedures desired to be performed on the nose and to the experience of the surgeon.

Nasal splints are used for 2-3 days to stop bleeding and to support the shape of the nose internally, and special bands and plastic splints are used for 6-8 days to maintain the shape of the nose.

Although swelling and bruises may occur around the nose and eyes after the surgery, most of these heal within 3-7 days. The length of postoperative hospital stay for the patient is 1-2 days.

What Should You Pay Attention After The Surgery?

After your nose surgery, the healing period requires time and patience. Your active participation in the postoperative care is as important as the surgery.

  1. After the surgery, you may not breathe through your nose due to splints. You should breathe through your mouth until the splints are removed. The duration of keeping the splints in your nose varies depending on the procedures performed in the nose.
  2. Consumption of water and light beverages will help alleviate the mouth dryness caused by breathing through the mouth. Do not use a straw.
  3. Eat soft, easy-to-chew food.
  4. Use lip creams to keep your lips moist.
  5. Do not use aspirin or blood thinners.
  6. Hold your head at a 30-degree angle while you are sleeping or resting. Pay attention to hold your head up during the day; this will protect your normal blood circulation and help reduce the postoperative swelling.
  7. Do not clean your nose by blowing and take care not to hit your nose.
  8. Brush your teeth gently with a soft toothbrush.
  9. After your surgery, avoid straining, bending, lifting heavy things (especially your small children) and avoid exercises and sport requiring effort for two weeks.
  10. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight for one month. Certainly use a sunscreen, especially in sunny environments.
  11. You may feel numbness on the tip of your nose and sometimes on your upper lip. This will recover within a few weeks.
  12. Once the splints have been removed, you may clean your nose gently by applying the ointment prescribed for you on the cotton part of a cotton swab (bud) 2-3 times a day. Do not insert the cotton swab upwards of your nostril. Clean your nose by irrigating the intranasal area with the nasal spray recommended by your doctor.
  13. Once the splints have been removed, your nose will become congested due to the oedema of intranasal tissues and blood clotting. This is a normal response of tissues to the surgery. Do not attempt to blow your nose for a week or two. When you have to sneeze and blow, do this gently with both nostrils open. If you have to sneeze, sneeze while your mouth is open.
  14. The first appearance of your nose after the surgery may surprise you. Remember that you should be patient and realistic. Do not forget that your nose has undergone a surgical intervention and will heal over time and be much better. A complete healing of your nose may require 6 to 12 months.
  15. Do not wear glasses for three months after the surgery.
