Gynecomasty

Gynecomasty is a medical term for the abnormal enlargement of the male breast. It is more common in adolescent males. Although the majority of them regresses, 10% of them are permanent. The type seen during adolescence is usually bilateral, it should waited for a year or two before intervening. Advanced age, obesity, steroid use, drug abuse, chronic liver diseases, hormone-releasing tumours, some genetic diseases are some of the other factors that cause breast enlargement in males. Weight loss usually does not solve the problem in the case of obesity-related gynecomasty.

About the Procedure

The surgery can be performed under general anaesthesia or sedation. The patient stays in the hospital for 1 night or is discharged within the same day. Only liposuction can be carried out depending on the extent and structure of breast enlargement. If the breast tissue is excess, it may be necessary to add a short incision from the edge of the areola (nipple). In patients with very large breasts, there is a need for further incisions since the skin should also be reduced.

Postoperative Period

There will be postoperative oedema and bruise and it will take a few weeks for them to regress. During this period, it is necessary to apply compression on the breast area with a corset. The patient can return to his normal life within 3-4 days. It is necessary to wait for about 1 month to start heavy sports.
